Pickle Birthday Cake
At Bravo Hugo, pickles never turn up where you expect them. The brand brings a pop, offbeat, thoroughly contemporary approach to the product, taking it into unexpected territory. That idea inspired this shoot: a pickle cake conceived as a genuine culinary creation, combining a real recipe with a strong visual statement.
The next step felt obvious: turn the cake into a trompe-l’œil creation. We made a layer cake with all the cues of a birthday dessert, entirely savory. A way to play with expectations, create surprise, and bring the brand’s promise to life.
We developed a custom recipe from the ground up, conceived from the start as a visual and storytelling piece.
The cake is made from several layers of pickle focaccia, whose soft, airy crumb recreates the look of a sweet layer cake.
Cream with pickles and dill between the layers strengthens the illusion while adding freshness and bringing the flavors together.
The whole cake is covered in savory frosting, then decorated with Bravo Hugo pickles and capers as playful nods to the brand.
To frame this culinary creation, we developed art direction inspired by birthday celebrations, reimagined through a retro yet contemporary lens. The cake takes center stage, surrounded by playful festive details: miniature disco balls, confetti, pickle candles, and chrome accessories that draw on both party culture and today’s visual language.
The color palette centers on Bravo Hugo’s signature greens, explored through different textures, glass, textiles, and light to immerse viewers in the brand’s world. The styling combines retro references with contemporary visual cues, balancing nostalgia and modernity.
The layer cake becomes a creative medium, where recipes, storytelling, and art direction meet.
This project captures Cantine Collective’s approach: creating culinary pieces with both visual appeal and meaning. Images that tell a story, express an identity, and help build a distinctive brand world.
